A male teacher at an elementary school in Kitahiroshima City, Hokkaido, has been dismissed for embezzling over 270,000 yen in materials fees collected from students’ parents to cover personal expenses. The teacher, 57, took the money from two classes he was responsible for on May 2nd, claiming that he would combine and pay for the materials on their behalf, which was false.
The Hokkaido Board of Education revealed that the teacher deceived colleagues by saying he lost the collected money and asked them to lend him cash, which raised suspicions. A colleague reported this to their superior, which led to the discovery of the embezzlement.
At the time, the teacher claimed to be in financial distress and unable to use consumer finance options, explaining, “I was struggling financially, and this money would have helped. I apologize for betraying the students’ trust.”
The stolen money has since been repaid, and no impact on the students occurred due to delays in preparing the materials.
