At least five cats missing a single leg have been sighted in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, since last year. The public health center is investigating the possibility of animal cruelty and is calling for information from the public.
One cat, with brown and white fur, is missing its left front leg from the elbow down. A black cat is also missing its right front leg. These two "single-legged cats" were found in a specific area of Hagyu, Niihama City. They were rescued in August of last year and June of this year.
Kaoru Matsuo, from the certified NPO "Ehime Dog and Cat Association," rescued both cats. She had previously found the black cat and was searching for it. The black cat recovered after surgery and is now living with Matsuo. The brown and white cat also underwent surgery and was adopted by a family in Matsuyama City, where it is reportedly living a healthy life.
The veterinarian who treated the two cats stated, "In cases of traffic accidents or being caught in a hunter's trap, part of the leg often remains attached, but the cats we treated had their legs completely torn off."
In addition to these two, at least three more cats missing a leg have been sighted in the same area this year. Based on the nature of the injuries, the veterinarian points to the "possibility of abuse." The "Ehime Dog and Cat Association" has consulted with the public health center and the police. The Saijo Public Health Center stated that they are "investigating with the possibility of abuse in mind, based on expert opinions," and are calling for information by posting flyers around the area.
The police have stated that they will "deal with the matter appropriately if a report is filed." Will the "SOS" of these animals be heard? Investigating the cause and preventing recurrence is urgent.
