On July 22, Democratic Party for the People (DPP) leader Yuichiro Tamaki said in a press conference that he does not support the ruling party’s plan to give 20,000 yen per person (or 40,000 yen for children and low-income households) as promised in the recent upper house election. He said, “They should just scrap it,” and clearly stated he would oppose the 2025 budget needed to fund the plan.
The Constitutional Democratic Party (CDP) also disagrees with the ruling party’s cash handout proposal. In the election, the CDP proposed three key policies:
- A flat 20,000 yen cash payment to everyone
- Cutting the consumption tax on food to 0% for one year starting next April
- A combined tax deduction and cash benefit program for low- and middle-income people
CDP Secretary-General Ogawa said the 20,000 yen payout is just a temporary measure until the food tax cut is ready. He emphasized that the payment only makes sense if all three policies are carried out together.
