Shoji Nishida, a member of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party re-elected in the Kyoto district, spoke to reporters on July 21st in Kyoto City. He stated that Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, also a Liberal Democratic leader, should take responsibility for the significant defeat suffered by the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito in the recent election. Nishida criticized Ishiba’s decision to remain in office as “unthinkable” and called for a leadership election.
Nishida also mentioned that when the ruling coalition lost its majority in last year’s House of Representatives election, Ishiba should have stepped down. He criticized Ishiba’s leadership, saying, “When people who have lost public trust speak, their words lack credibility.”
Despite facing a difficult election due to backlash over his comments regarding the Himeyuri Monument in Okinawa, which he described as “rewriting history,” Nishida managed to retain his seat.
