Hello all,
I'll be living in Tokyo for the Fall semester as an international student. I've been looking for apartments, and there are two that look good – but one has a bathroom dryer, and the other has 24-hour garbage disposal. Which do you think is better to go for? Or should I try to get a place with both? I'm leaning toward the bathroom dryer, but I know that garbage can be tricky in Japan. Any insight would be very appreciated. Thanks!

A “bathroom dryer” as a drying function in the bath/shower room or a proper dryer by the washing machine?
Neither of these are features that you should be using to decide between apartments. They’re both very minor and will not significantly impact your time in the apartment.
>bathroom dryer
This is a standard feature in many, if not *most* Japanese apartments. Most of the ones in student-grade apartments are garbage and don’t work very well. You’ll end up hanging clothes in the window or in the bathroom with the regular exhaust fan most of the time.
>24-hour garbage disposal
This doesn’t mean that someone is going to pick up and sort your garbage for you. It just means that you have 24 hour access to the dumpster or wherever you drop your garbage. It’s not going to help in the slightest with the “tricky” garbage.
