A passenger’s smartphone caught fire on the Yamanote Line, four passengers who escaped to the tracks were injured and transported to hospital… All lines resumed operation

Around 4:10 p.m. on July 20, a smartphone or mobile battery caught fire on a JR Yamanote Line train between Shin-Okubo and Shinjuku stations. Some passengers got off onto the tracks, so train service was stopped for safety.

JR East also temporarily stopped service on the Chuo Rapid Line, Chuo-Sobu Line, and Shonan-Shinjuku Line. After confirming no passengers were on the tracks, service resumed on those lines around 4:50 p.m. The Yamanote Line’s outer loop resumed around 5:00 p.m., and the inner loop resumed at 6:12 p.m.

According to JR, four passengers were injured and taken to the hospital.
