Issues with Google map when driving long distance and unknown roads

I just finished a road trip in Shikoku and it went mostly great using Google map as my navigation system. But I had 2 issues:

– first: Google map sometimes choose very small roads when finding the shortest travel (I guess), so small that I did backtrack 2 times to find better roads (imagine road as wide as a car but that aren't one way, one of them wasn't even maintained, with sand, stones, tree branches all over). There isn't a choice in the kind of road in google map, I would have liked to avoid those very small roads. But overall, it was ok.

– Second: And this one made me very unhappy and the main issue I would like to solve, Google is completely wrong on the highway fares. At each toll, I paid significantly more than what Google map said (and my car is a kei, the fare in Google map is given for normal cars!). I would like to know how much I will pay, not a vague estimation based on 20 years old data. But Maybe it was because I do not use ETC?

Unfortunately, I do not master the Japanese language enough to use a full Japanese app like Navitime. I do have a navigation in my car but the map is too old to be reliable and to expensive to update.

Does anyone have a good advice to solve those issues?
