Apartment building asked us to move out.

Hi! I am currently living somewhere in Sakyo-ku. I've been staying in my apartment for only 4 months now. Our contract was 1 year. The owner of the building asked us all to vacate the rooms, but was given options. They said it's for some renovation. Our options were to:

  • leave the place then come back after 2 weeks, which was not ideal, because where will we stay??!
  • move to another room/building owned by the same management, but these other places were not to our liking.
  • or just move to another place.

We are foreigners here so we do not know the law. We did signed a contract, Aren't we owed anything for this hassle? Cause now we need to pay another set of key money, guarantor charges and all that initial fees for the new room, and also the hassle of moving our things, and paying the haulers.

Thanks for any input you can share.

  1. If you have a regular contract and they offer you to go away for 2 weeks, they have to pay for your stay.

  2. suck it up, move to their alternative provided room for the 2 weeks. alternatively move to a hotel for 2 weeks. dont expect you will be reimbursed.

you can ask nicely if they can give you back the 2 weeks pay or if they pay for moving stuff around.

but from their view, they are asking you to leave for 2 weeks to renovate ,and they provided you with an alternative.
