So I paid 1,050 yen for an 840 yen item, hoping to get a 210 yen change (to avoid small coins).
Then the clerk asked another clerk:
“Why would someone give an extra 50 yen? Are they stupid or something?”
(…right in front of me lol)
Apparently, giving anything other than round amounts is seen as suspicious or confusing here.
Many part-timers seem to panic when customers try to “optimize” their change like that.
