A male teacher in Nagoya City committed suicide due to depression after working over 100 hours of overtime. His family sued for damages and the matter was settled for 56 million yen.

A male teacher in Nagoya took his own life in 2016 after suffering from depression caused by overwork. He was 36 years old and worked at a city-run junior high school, also serving as a club advisor. In the three months before developing depression, he was logging over 100 hours of overtime per month.

His family sued Nagoya City and Aichi Prefecture, seeking about 69 million yen in damages, claiming the school failed to take action despite knowing about his long working hours.

The case has now been settled, with Nagoya City agreeing to pay 56 million yen.

The city’s superintendent, Hiromasa Sugiura, expressed deep regret and said the city will work on improving working conditions for teachers and ensuring a safe and healthy school environment for students.
