Hello, fellow Redditors!
I’m planning a move to Japan with my family and would love your insights. Having spent a lot of time in Hiroo in Tokyo during my 20s staying with family friends, I have a fondness for the area though fully aware it’s very expensive. So, I’m considering more cost-effective alternatives that still offer a strong international community.
Key Criteria:
International Schools: Access to reputable international schools with a diverse expat community.
Housing: Ability to rent a 2-bedroom home nearby for less than ~¥280,000/month.
Community: A neighborhood that balances international vibes with local Japanese culture—avoiding areas that are predominantly international schools with Western families.()
Background:
I have a strong connection to Hiroo and appreciate its proximity to embassies, greenery, and international amenities.
However, I’m open to exploring other neighborhoods that offer a similar lifestyle but at a more affordable price point.
We ski, love the outdoors and would welcome any ideas outside the major cities.
Questions:
1. Which neighborhoods in Tokyo (or nearby) offer access to international schools and have a vibrant expat community?
2. Are there areas where housing costs are more affordable while still maintaining a high quality of life?
3. Any personal experiences or recommendations for families in similar situations?
Thank you in advance for your advice and suggestions!
