Nemuro, Hokkaido – A yacht carrying three foreign nationals ran aground off Cape Otchishi in Nemuro, Hokkaido, resulting in one injury. The injured individual was transported to a hospital.
At the time of the incident, the sea was rough and foggy.
The distress call came in just after 11:30 AM on the 16th. Foreigners aboard the yacht, located about six kilometers off Cape Otchishi in Nemuro, contacted the First Regional Coast Guard Headquarters with an urgent "Mayday!" and reports that their "boat is sinking" and they were "requesting rescue."
A patrol vessel from the Nemuro Coast Guard has been dispatched to the scene.
The yacht, a 59-ton vessel registered in the UK, had three foreign nationals aboard who managed to reach shore on their own.
Among them, the 59-year-old New Zealand national who was the captain sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening.
At the time of the incident, dense fog covered the area, and the sea was rough with swells reaching five meters.
