Auto exports to the U.S. fall 26.7% as prices fall in light of tariffs – June trade statistics

According to preliminary trade statistics for June released by the Ministry of Finance on the 17th, Japan’s exports to the United States fell by 11.4% compared to the same month last year, totaling 1.7071 trillion yen. This decline was significantly impacted by a 26.7% decrease in automobile exports due to additional tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Manufacturers are worried about prolonged negotiations, and some car companies are considering price increases in the U.S. due to these tariffs.

For three consecutive months since April, the value of automobile exports has been below last year’s levels, with the decline widening. However, the number of vehicles exported remains relatively stable. This may be because manufacturers have lowered export prices to keep U.S. retail prices from rising due to tariffs.

Taro Saito, head of economic research at NLI Research Institute, noted that the significant drop in export prices has severely impacted the profitability of domestic car manufacturers. Some companies that cannot withstand the pressure have already started raising prices, and a decrease in the number of exports is anticipated in the future.
