The Kamakura City Tourism Association announced on July 17 that the Kamakura Fireworks Festival, scheduled for July 18, has been canceled due to high waves and strong winds at sea. These conditions made it unsafe for the fireworks barge to travel. There is no backup date.
Originally, the fireworks barge was supposed to leave Tokyo Bay late at night on July 16 and arrive near Enoshima (Fujisawa City) around 9 a.m. on July 17. However, due to rough sea conditions, the barge couldn’t pass off the coast of Kannonzaki (Yokosuka City) and had to turn back around 8 a.m.
The Kamakura Fireworks Festival, held at Yuigahama and Zaimokuza beaches, is a beloved summer tradition. Last year, it returned after a 5-year break due to COVID-19, drawing about 160,000 people who enjoyed 2,500 fireworks.
