Advice for Moving to Japan as a .NET Backend Developer (27M, Croatia)

Hello everyone,

I'm at a point in my life where I'm seriously considering moving to Japan. I'm a 27-year-old backend developer from Croatia with a Master's degree in Informatics from the University of Zagreb.

I have 3 years of backend experience across two companies (currently working at the second one). My main stack is .NET, and I’ve also been learning Japanese in my free time — I’d estimate my level is around N4 to N3, although I haven’t taken the JLPT yet.

My short-term plan:

  • Continue working in Croatia for at least one more year.
  • Improve my Japanese proficiency.
  • Build 1–2 complex personal projects to showcase on GitHub (my current GitHub mostly contains university projects).

My main question is:

Should I stick with .NET for my portfolio projects, or would switching to something more popular in Japan (like JavaNode.jsPython, etc.) improve my chances when applying for jobs there?

Regardless of the language, I plan to deploy the projects to a live domain and include a frontend component, even though my primary focus will remain backend.

If anyone has additional advice related to this theme, I'd love to hear it!

Thanks in advance!
