On July 16, Sanseito leader Sohei Kamiya told reporters in Toyama that he has "no interest at all" in becoming Prime Minister. He added, "I actually want to retire. I feel like I’ve done enough. I still have three years left in my term as a senator, so I want to build the party properly and then pass it on to the next generation."
Kamiya also said, "When people get greedy, they get used. I want to clearly decide when to step down," and complained, "Honestly, I'm tired of answering the same media questions every day." He added that once the party is functioning well as an organization, he would prefer to work behind the scenes, traveling around the country to connect with party members.
