Okinawa – 1-Oct to 5-Oct

Hi all! As a final part of our 3-weeks honeymoon in Japan we are taking a few days in Okinawa (arriving 1st of Oct at 2pm, and leaving 5th of Oct in the evening). Probably Ishigaki could have been better suited for our plans but we got the flights already. We want to be able to snorkeling and island hopping, mostly some beaches and have some relaxing evenings (like going to some decent restaurant and such).
I have currently booked an hotel near the center of Naha (free cancellation), but now from reading the subreddit I am getting analysis-paralysis and wonder whether Onna or Nago would be best. We are renting a car anyway to make our lives easier.
I am just a bit scared that island hopping (Zamami, Tokashiki) will get too difficult from Onna/Nago, while by staying in Naha we can drive up during the day and come back during the evening (even after dinner). After several days of hopping around we wouldn't want to change hotels, so we want to pick just one location to sleep.
Is Onna/Nago limiting for island hopping, are there decent food option beside the resorts you stay in? Is Naha too dull to enjoy?

Thanks for you help!

  1. Seriously, the best Okinawa experience is to just get in the car and head north up one side and back down the other. Find some safe beaches to snorkel. Eat at a local soba shop, etc.

Doing the “tourist thing” you’ll see the tourist things that don’t really have much to do with Okinawa and the culture. Japanese TV even had a spot the other night on how “tipping” has now infiltrated Okinawa thanks to tourism. The local government put out a help plea because even famous local soba places in Nago are hurting because locals are staying home due to the Junglia traffic.

Come to Okinawa. Do Okinawa things.
