The busy travel rush has started at Narita Airport as many people leave Japan to spend the Obon holiday abroad. Families and young travelers with large suitcases are lining up at the international departure counters, and crowds are growing, especially toward the evening flights.
One traveler heading to the Philippines said they left Niigata because of an upcoming water shortage and the hot weather. Another going to Singapore said they finished all their homework in preparation and are excited for the trip.
During the Obon season, over 490,000 people are expected to depart from Narita. Both ANA and Japan Airlines have more international reservations than last year. ANA bookings are up 10.5%, with flights to Hawaii seeing record-high numbers for this holiday period.
The busiest day for departures is expected to be August 9, while the peak for returns will be August 16.
