Hey guys, was just walking back from FamilyMart in the dark this evening (just grabbed some rolls of kitchen towel) and a police car suddenly pulled out of a car park and started following behind me. Two cops got out of the car and then asked me about where I live, what I'm doing atm etc. and I just told them where and what job I was doing (and that I just moved to Japan recently). Tbh I am a darker skinned dude and don't look very Japanese so they probably did think I was 怪しい lol
Anyway they asked if I had my Zairyuu card and I handed it over, I had to explain how to read out my name in Katakana but they just scribbled my details down and went about their way. After they wrote stuff down I asked them some general questions about if I should keep my torch turned on, walk on the right hand side of the road etc. at night and to be honest they were quite friendly guys (or so I think). Incidentally I can speak Japanese so I'm fortunate that that was the case, otherwise I'd probably be freaking out.
But in any case, is this a big deal? I just assumed they wanted an excuse to get down the details of a new foreigner living in that small town. I've heard of this happening before but I've never been carded or approached by police in Japan previously, so it was a little startling lol
