“It’s difficult to release sexual desire…” – Former university associate professor (51) found guilty of secretly filming female students.

A former associate professor at Shinshu University in Nagano Prefecture is on trial for secretly filming female students with small hidden cameras in university restrooms and lodging facilities. The man admitted to the charges during his first court hearing.

According to the indictment, in June 2022, he tricked a female student into trying on clothes in a university restroom and filmed her without permission. Later, in September 2022, he took two students on a trip to Kyoto and secretly recorded them in hotel bathrooms. In June 2024, he also filmed a student at another lodging facility.

At the trial, his wife testified that she was shocked when she learned about the crimes and said she plans to monitor his behavior closely to prevent repeat offenses. The defendant explained that his actions began after seeing a hidden camera during a 2019 school trip, and he admitted that personal issues related to a childhood illness and fear of intimate relationships contributed to his behavior.

The prosecution called his actions selfish and cruel, asking for a prison sentence of 1 year and 10 months. The defense asked for a suspended sentence, noting his lack of prior criminal record and that both he and his wife want to apologize and prevent reoffending.

The defendant expressed deep remorse and apologized to the victims and others he hurt. The trial ended the same day, with a verdict set for September 17.
