Why do people hate English anime dubs but praise Japanese dubs of English cartoons.

Sorry, I meant to post this in r/anime but they have this stupid new rule where you have to gain karma before you're allowed to post there and I can't be arsed to keep posting randomly when I just wanna ask one question that I'm passionate about.

Anyway, I thought people hated the idea of dubs but every now and then I get recommended a Japanese dub of a cartoon and people are fascinated! Is it that Japanese just sounds better? Or is there something deeper going on? My theory is that Americans are obsessed with Japanese and find everything "based" and more authentic with their culture. Also the fact that most of us aren't fluent with it makes it just sound cooler and less nuanced. I saw a video a few years ago in which they interviewed actual Japanese folks on the streets of Japan about what they think about Japanese dubs of English shows and they didn't seem to mind which is very telling. So I'm wondering if this has to do more about "weeb culture" or if Japanese just that much better? Please explain.
