If you’re in Kyoto this weekend, you might notice small neighborhood festivals called Jizō-bon (地蔵盆) happening on local streets. Here’s what you should know:
What is Jizō-bon?
– Jizō-bon is a traditional festival held in Kyoto (and parts of Kansai) at the end of August each year. The event centers on Jizō, a Buddhist guardian deity of children, travelers, and the community.
It is mainly a neighborhood festival for children and families. The kids gather around local Jizō statues, play games, get treats, and sometimes participate in activities like cleaning or decorating the statue. There may be prayers or small rituals led by Buddhist priests, aiming to pray for the healthy growth of children and express community gratitude
Important Etiquette for Visitors:
Jizō-bon is a local, family-oriented event—not a tourist attraction or public spectacle.
– Please DO NOT enter neighborhood gatherings uninvited or photograph children. Many areas close off small streets for these events and value privacy and community safety.
– If you are a resident or have children AND are invited to take part by locals, joining is welcome and appreciated. Otherwise, it’s best to just admire the decorations respectfully from a distance.
