Sorry If this is not allowed here, other more appropriate subs don't allow images so I'm hoping this is ok.
Grandfather was sent by his company to help launch their Japanese joint venture with Mitsubishi in the 60s/70s. We recently just discovered my grandmother's ID card, and as I don't understand the Japanese language or address systems, I would appreciate some help identifying where they lived. My family and I plan to visit at some point down the line (this isn't a travel post, as we have no current plans or flights booked, etc. ) and we wish to visit their old apartment (if it's there), the area around it, etc when we do eventually go.
Thanks in Advance

The address listed is Minato-ku (Tokyo), Azabu-Mamianachō, Mamiana Mansion.
Here’s some information and the location: [https://housingjapan.com/rent/mamiana-mansion/](https://housingjapan.com/rent/mamiana-mansion/)
I’m not really sure if this is allowed, either, I mean her full name is completely visible.
At any rate, this is the area your grandmother used to live. It’s one of the nicest parts of Tokyo. I don’t have any info to add but just wanted to say this is pretty cool. If you have any photos of their time in Tokyo we’d love to see them!
Address: (Tokyo-to) Minato-ku Azabu-Mamianacho 44
Seems like the old building, Mamiana Mansion, has been torn down and rebuilt into the current, Branz Azabu-Mamianacho, building; but they have the same address, so it should be correct.

She lived in a brand new apt building (Mamiana Mansion), right on the side of the Soviet Embassy and within walking distance from the Tokyo American Club. The old apt was rebuilt in 2014 as Branz Azabu Mamiamacho. It is a nice area in Minato ku (even more now with Azabudai Hills nearby) , and you can translate this page to learn more about its history, etc [https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%BA%BB%E5%B8%83%E7%8B%B8%E7%A9%B4%E7%94%BA](https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E9%BA%BB%E5%B8%83%E7%8B%B8%E7%A9%B4%E7%94%BA)
My parents lived in that neighborhood during that period and I’d bet anything they ran into your grandparents at some point, I’m sure they would have frequented the Tokyo American Club, or crossed paths at National Azabu supermarket, etc.
Individual buildings are torn down and rebuilt often in Tokyo but the streets remain the same, so it’s definitely very fun to visit and walk in their footsteps.
that’s a nice area and quite close to Azabudai Hills….clearly your grandparents had good taste👍🏼
Their apartment name was Tanuki hole? lol
Also, if you were curious, this is her old driver’s license.
Other people have already posted the address, so I don’t have anything helpful to add. She lived in a very nice area. It’s also cool to see what a foreign resident ID looked like from back then!
Please send me a DM. I have neighborhood contacts.
Also, this is so cool!
This is an awesome location, even moreso now with Azabudai Hills in literally the next block.
Philip Gustafson?
Some intersting things I noticed.
1. Mamiana literally means hole nest of racoon dog in Japanese. A cute town name. (So cute that I felt it’s a fake at first sight.)
2. First time I saw the actual driving license issued by the Police 50 years ago. At that time the license entitles holder to drive a motorcycle without engine displacement restriction. (now restricted to 50cc)
3. Years on license are all in the Showa Imperial era.
The birth year of your grandma is Showa 12, or 1937.
Looks as if she was born in Japan at that time, then survived the hardships of Japan wartime.
I live very close to where they lived. If you have any spots you’d like me to take some photographs of, please shoot it over 🙂
Wow, the design of Japan’s drivers licenses has not really changed at all.
Swedish roots? Gustafson is not an uncommon surname there.
Minato, tell of cuz, must be high level executives that works in foreign company stationed in Tokyo.
44 Azabumamianacho, Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan
I live very close to the area and I’ve passed by this place many times. They rebuilt that condominium in favor of a newer one. Quite calm residential area despite being close to action.
