Hey all! I'm studying abroad in Kyoto and will be staying with a host mother in a condo near Ichijoji (more specifically in Takano along Kitaoji-dori), which I don't have much experience venturing into.
Do any of you have experience with the area, and if so, could you give me some insight into what it's like, or any favorite spots in the area? Sorry for the vague question, but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are supermarkets, drug stores, a shopping mall, barber shops, pet stores, bike shops, restaurants and a river.
literally my dream area 😫!! i go there quite often, and had friends living there. it’s a quite area, a bit remote from the busy/touristy part. but lots of good restaurants, bakeries, and ofc it’s a known student bed town so necessities should be easily accessible. pizza monstar is one of my FAVE pizza places in kyoto, and there is a great book store called Keibunsha(they are both in Ichijoji area but it should be walkable)
I lived just down the Takano River from there, Mikagebashi. As others have said it has a lot of students, so the restaurants and businesses that cater to them are prominent. It’s also known as Kyoto’s ramen battlefield so if you like ramen, you’ll enjoy the variety.
Overall a nice middle-class area, not many tourists. Not the most photogenic or exciting place in Kyoto but a nice neighborhood in which to live.
One word…..
Ramen.
😍
It’s a student neighborhood with a bunch of ramen shops.
