Japan in May

Alright, just got my plane tickets sorted out for May next year, landing after Golden Week and staying the rest of the month. I haven’t decided where I’ll be going yet, outside of Tokyo, and I’m looking for any seasonal things one could experience in May and I figured I could ask if anybody here got experience to share?

I’m thinking of entirely skipping the Kansai region this go around, but I’m opened to anything. Only thing is I can’t drive so I can’t go that far from a train station.

Edit: I know I’m vague here but I just like to read people’s experience outside the Golden Route, don’t feel pressured to match my preferences your passion can make it interesting anyway.

  1. Kyoto has the Aoi Matsuri in May 15. I do recommend checking it out if you are in Kyoto during this time. [https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3948.html](https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3948.html)

Your question is pretty open ended, and suggestions depend on your preferences.

You could consider a regionally focused itinerary, such as Tohoku, which has fewer tourists and plenty of wonderful places, including a good mixture of nature, tradition, and contemporary Japan, much of it doable by trains, or else often easily accessible from bus rides from a train station.

  2. Do you like flowers? May is the perfect time for nemophila in Ibaraki, pink moss in Yamanashi (Fuji-san area), wisteria in Ashikaga, and so on.
Weird enough it’s also the time you can visit snow wall in Tateyama.
