Itinerary Check: 16 days — Golden Route + Shimanami Kaidō & Miyajima

Hi everyone, hope you’re enjoying the weekend!

I have an upcoming trip to Japan and would love an itinerary check. Everything has free cancellation so far, so I’m pretty flexible.
We’re two couples in our 30s traveling from Canada, arriving and departing from Narita. We don’t plan to rent a car (trains are amazing 🚆), but it’s a possibility.
We're active, nature-oriented, love japanese food, culture and history, we won't spent a full day in museums tho
I tried to create an itinerary that is not super focused on things hour by hour, but just by general areas to visit, try to keep a good plan but semi spontaneous

I would appreciate:

  • Any pointers, tips
  • Big mistakes I'm making
  • If any day feels super rushed or super slow
  • Must-book places
  • "Skip this, add this" advice
  • Opinion on flex days

  1. Check Shinjuku Gyouen’s openings. I think it’s usually closed on Mondays, but 15 September is a holiday, so it may well be closed on 16 September instead.

  2. Sep 17 – Yeah I can’t imagine picking Kawaguchiko, especially as a day trip since you’re going to Hakone immediately after. Just doesn’t make logistical sense to me. I’ve been wanting to visit Nikko but I hear it’s more of an overnight thing considering how long it takes to get there. I would go with Mt Takao or Kamakura/Enoshima depending if you want to hike or see the ocean. Mt Takao is probably better in autumn but you’re going to see the ocean on the Shimanami Kaido anyway, so it’s really up to you.
