A shared electric scooter and bike service called "LUUP" launched in Sapporo on July 31.
LUUP lets people rent electric kick scooters and electric-assist bicycles from about 50 parking spots around central Sapporo. It’s the 16th city in Japan to get the service, and the second area in Hokkaido, after Biei town started using it earlier in 2024.
To use LUUP, you need to:
- Download the app
- Pass a traffic rules test with a perfect score
- Be 16 or older, confirmed with ID like a My Number card
Users said the controls are easy and it’s great for getting around short distances or visiting tourist spots. The vehicles can even handle hills smoothly.
LUUP is mainly meant to help people travel conveniently “door-to-door,” like from home to the office.
- Rental cost starts at 50 yen
- 40 scooters and 160 bikes are available in Sapporo
- Service runs until November 16 this year
