Need with with Kanji resources and a few quick questions.

I’m trying to practice reading Hiragana but when I try to use real world resources I can’t understand Kanji, and there’s such an overwhelming amount. Any advice/informational resources you can provide would be helpful.

Do I have to memorize thousands of symbols?

  1. The only way to get better is by doing it more

Watch some tv shows with japanese subs and follow along

Do that for a few months and it works like a charm

  2. I reccomend you learn words instead of isolated Kanji. Knowing the kanji does not mean you can read words, but knowing the words means you can read kanji, if that makes sense.

  3. Short answer: yes.

Long answer: Yes, but there are a lot of resources to help you learn them. Searching “kanji resources” in this sub will get you plenty of results, but here are some of the popular ones to look up:

    – RTK (Remembering the Kanji, by Heisig – book with many flashcard decks modeled after it)
    – WaniKani (popular app)
    – KKLC (Kodansha Kanji Learner’s Course)

Alternately, some people don’t focus on learning the kanji individually, and they just dive into a vocab deck and learn them as parts of words. Try it both ways for yourself, and see what sticks best in your memory.
