The Osaka Prefectural Board of Education announced on August 1 that a 26-year-old male teacher at a prefectural high school has been given a one-month pay reduction (by 10%) as disciplinary action for repeatedly making inappropriate remarks to a female student in his class.
According to the board, during a parent-teacher-student conference in November last year, the teacher said, “This may sound harsh, but are you okay staying this ugly?” During a P.E. class, when the student played goalkeeper in handball, he told others, “Aim for her face.” He also reportedly said during a long-distance run, “Who would ever date someone like you, you ugly freak.”
The issue came to light after another student’s parent contacted the school. In response to the board’s investigation, the teacher claimed he was trying to use strong language as a form of guidance but acknowledged his remarks were inappropriate. He added, “I deeply regret having caused a loss of trust among students and parents. I sincerely apologize.”
