Meat Guy – Steak Spice Renewal

I used to purchase Meat Guy's steak spice often. Though last time I purchased was about a year ago as I wanted to save money. But now that I have expendable wage, I decided to start buying them again.

Then I find out the package got renewed. Meat Guy's selling point being the new cap allows for easier time spreading the spice. That's fair. Or at least I thought.

The weight of the new package is also 70g, 40g less than the original's 110g. Though I just thought, eh, inflation, right?

I ordered 6 via Rakuten on the 28th, arrived today on the 30th. And I am shocked to say the least.

I still have the original's glass package, so I was able to compare the ingredients.

Original:
Ingredient Weight: 110g
Salt: 48g
Herbs & Spices: ~62g (not directly stated on the package, but math checks out)

New:
Ingredient Weight: 70
Salt: 48g
Herbs & Spices: ~22g

The amount of salt remained the same. That's practically a 40g reduction in ingredients the product is actually advertised for. It's in the name; Steak "SPICE". You're no longer buying for the spices. You are now paying for overpriced salt.

You'd the price would be cheaper. But no. The original was 670 yen and the new one is 770 yen. 100 yen more for two thirds less herbs and spices.

Not only that, today's the 30th, and the expiry date is October 9th. 2.0.2.5. Oh, wow, I get a whole 40 or so days to use all six! Yes, I know you can still use it after the expiry date, but the original gave you at least half a year.

This is egregious to say the least…and just disappointing that the best steak spice in Japan is now reduced to corporate scummery (probably, or at least I heard Meat Guy's was bought out by corpo).

At this point I think I might just try to make the darn thing myself.

Shame. Shame. Shame.
