Applying for 車庫証明, maps of surrounding area and parking space.

After signing the contract for new apartment I contacted my 不動産 for 車庫証明。They asked me to contact the 管理会社 for it. I called them, they responded with an automated call. Meanwhile my work boss suggested that I take my details, apartment contract agreement and parking space document to the 警察官 and they would process the application. We went to them and they said they can start processing when I start living in my new apartment which is from tomorrow. They asked me to submit maps of my surroundings and gave me the usual document to fill it.

Surrounding map of area is ok with Google Maps but it also says to enter details such as road width, parking space length and width. How do I measure it? I tried using the measuring tool on Google maps but it places points on random places. I can also draw by hand but how do I do the measurements?

  1. Your  管理会社 should have the dimensions of the parking space. For the distance from your home to the parking space you can use the measuring tool.

  2. Your realestate agent or whoever they refer you to for the 車庫証明書 will usually at the minimum provide you dimensions for the car space.

More often than not, unless it’s a newly built properly the police already have the dimensions in their system so nobody actually comes to check. It doesn’t really have to be super accurate, I’ve eyeballed the last 3 spaces and quite frankly most police stations don’t care. If your car dimensions fit within the car space, in their mind it’s a done deal.
Just refer to your 車検証 for the dimensions of your car.

The one thing you may be asked is the width of the road leading to the car space etc.
this again can be a figure you pull out of your ass – it just needs to look like you’ve filled everything in and the car can pass through the road leading to your car space etc

  3. My management company (this word exists in English!) has everything available online. Just need to print it off their website.
Maybe if yours is a big enough company , everything can be done online.
