On the night of July 31, a 73-year-old woman was attacked by a bear on the grounds of a disability support facility in Kitaakita City, Akita Prefecture. She was found bleeding from her face and neck and is now in critical condition, unconscious.

Security camera footage showed the woman carrying a garbage bag toward a nearby trash collection point when a bear about one meter long attacked her from the front. The bear then left in the opposite direction of the facility.

Another resident saw the woman lying near the facility’s entrance, groaning.

Police are increasing patrols around the area and will investigate the details once the woman’s condition stabilizes.
