Sakana AI devising unique Japanese AI, CEO says

Major AI companies create AI models from scratch after spending vast amounts using huge datasets. In contrast, Sakana AI keeps development costs low by leveraging U.S. and Chinese technologies. "All the U.S. companies are trying to get dominance, but China is not letting that happen: they're also developing their own AI technology. So I think the cost of these models is going to be very cheap [for us] because of this fundamental war over AI," Ha said. Japan, in particular, maintains amicable relations with the U.S. and strong economic ties with China. Japan is thus in a position to be supplied with graphic processing units (GPUs) — the electronic chips indispensable to the development of AI — from the U.S., while there are many excellent Chinese engineering graduates from the University of Tokyo and other top-notch Japanese universities who are willing to work in Japan.
