  1. Law enforcement here seems to be woefully ineffective, especially in cases like this. Sad that someone has to get stabbed to death in public before any kind of change (hopefully) happens.

  2. Kanagawa police are famous for this. They have a long and rich history of not giving a shit about crimes committed against women.

  3. When I dealt with the Japanese police they were really incompetent. They were more concerned with the fact that people might be late for work than a crime occuring. And even told me how long the paperwork would be.

My wife who grew up here experienced similar. Absolutely useless unless it’s protecting copyright law.

  4. I live in Kanagawa. This is par for the course. Meanwhile they’ve got small armies out everyday in my area trying to catch people driving on time-restricted one way streets or crossing the yellow lines approaching traffic lights. Some examples. One they like to do by my house has literally 5-10 officers involved for each “operation”. They’ve got officers hiding behind bushes, patrol cars hiding behind walls, 4 officers waiting around the corner to catch people driving on a time-restricted one way street. Another sting operation they like to do in my area also involves a ton of officers with some hiding behind trees watching an intersection, some standing-by ready to dangerously run out in the middle of moving traffic to flag a car over, and an army of officers waiting on a side street to handle the criminal that crossed the yellow line. The last example scared the shit out of me and a half dozen other drivers a few weeks back when they went running out into the middle of the cars driving 50 km/h to flag a car over that crossed the yellow line. Maybe it’s time they start dedicating some resources to actual criminals and creepers instead of having the entire force involved in whatever massive operation involving whatever minor issue (such as the fake idol goods on Mercari, the stolen ¥500 from the shrine, minor traffic violations, etc.). Wont happen though.

  5. The cops refused to help some tourists who were being extorted by chinpira. They literally stood by and watched. Unbelievable.
