How was your first time onsen experience?

I F30 going for my first trip to Japan next week, and one thing I’m both excited and nervous about is trying an onsen . As a female traveler, I’ve heard mixed things—some people say it’s the most relaxing, memorable part of their trip, while others admit it can feel intimidating at first (being nude, etiquette, etc.). So, I would like to know

Did you feel awkward at first, or did it quickly feel normal?

Any tips for easing nerves (like where to put your small towel, what to avoid doing, or if certain onsens feel more foreigner-friendly)?

Would you recommend starting with a private onsen first or just going for the communal experience?

I’d love to hear your stories—funny, awkward, or magical. Hoping it’ll give me (and other first-timers) a better idea of what to expect!
