Traveling to Japan this December

I’m heading to Japan this December! First time visiting in winter, so I’m not totally sure what to pack. So far I’ve only thought of the basics: passport, cash, travel adapter, and warm clothes.

I heard you can still catch some autumn leaves around that time, which I’m super excited about! But I’m also a bit worried it might get really windy or snowy and cold.

Any must-bring items you guys would recommend? Also, do you have any suggestions for unique spots to see the autumn leaves? Doesn’t have to be the super popular ones.

  1. Well depending on where you go, you can be snorkeling in the ocean at wetsuit temperatures or make your way across the snow.

So maybe we first narrow down this “Japan” you’re talking about.

  2. Japan is huge, Hokkaido and Okinawa can be 30 degrees different.

Generally speaking, good shoes is important.

  3. As others have said, it very much depends upon where you go.

If you’re visiting the main spots, such as Tokyo and Kyoto/Osaka, it will be chilly in the morning and evening but won’t be really cold. During the daytime, if it’s sunny, you’ll have temperatures of 10 – 15 degrees Celsius, going down to nearly 0 degrees or even very slightly below 0 degrees Celsius in the middle of the night/early morning.

Weather is usually fine and clear but can sometimes be cloudy with a cool breeze that lowers the temperature.

It almost never snows anywhere along the Pacific coast at any time in December. There will sometimes be light falls in January. If you want to see snow, you will need to head inland to the mountains, over to the Sea of Japan coast, or up to northern Honshu or Hokkaido.

When thinking about what to wear, layering is important as most trains and businesses are heated. So you can be outside with a chill wind and then get onto a train and go into a cafe and suddenly start to overheat. So, it’s good to wear layers so you can take off a jacket and even a jumper when you get somewhere warm.

  4. I’d recommend going to Kyushu. By December, there are very few places where you can still see autumn leaves.
