Nursing care at home for an IV

During the summer I get heatstroke a few times a year. It’s always been the case, but it’s getting hotter every year and I am getting older (M51). I am also a pasty white Englishman who is not evolved to handle the heat. I have been trying to figure out how to get a saline or banana bag IV administered which will treat it immediately. Lots of clinics around me in Minato-ku will give me a garlic or hangover IV but it’s just not enough volume. I could call an ambulance but that doesn’t seem right when we don’t have enough for real emergencies. I can take a taxi to a hospital and wait for a few hours, taking up spaces for sick people. There are so few nurses available, agencies are interested in monthly commitments only. I don’t need English or insurance coverage. I could probably do it for myself, but if you’ve had heatstroke before, you are not at your best and I’m clumsy at the best of times. It takes me 3+ days to recover and I lose workdays each time. I don’t drink alcohol or caffeine during the summer and only go out in the heat unless I have to.

Anyone got any recommendations on how I might find a nursing service who can arrive with the necessary equipment and administer a simple IV for me with a few hours of notice?

  1. Do you run your A/C and drink enough water?

It seems like there’s a lot of precautions you can take to prevent this before jumping to needing on demand IV.

Heatstroke is caused by prolonged exposure to hot temps and dehydration. You mention what the clinics have done for you but you don’t really mention what you’ve done for yourself.

Make sure you drink a loooot of water. Liquid IV is sold in Japan, I’ve tried it out since I ended up in the ER due to complications with dehydration. It’s a powdered substance you can put in your water. Pocari sweat can also help combat dehydration as well by replenishing your electrolytes.

Drinking enough water should be your #1 priority.

  2. I feel like you might need to get a check up, repeatedly getting heat stroke is not normal. It’s very easy to avoid heatstroke, I’m a white person from Australia and the only people who get it are little old ladies who don’t have air conditioning or tourists who are outside in the hottest part of the day.

  3. If you have an ongoing need for IVs you should visit a 内科. They may be able to arrange for what you need.

  4. Unless you have kidney issues, drinking enough fluids with electrolytes should be enough to rehydrate during the heatwave.

You mentioned in your other replies that you sweat profusely. This just means that you have to replenish / rehydrate more frequently than normal. And it is very likely that you are not drinking frequently enough.

IV administration of Normal Saline is usually reserved for those who are incapable of ingesting fluids. While it does wonders for rehydration- this simple procedure still has its own inherent risks.

But then again, if you can pay for this service then no one is stopping you 🙏🏼 best to ask for referral from your doctor who does the full “executive” body check up. And mention that you are willing to pay for such services
