Still Don’t Have Residence Card and Have Started a New Job

Hey everyone,

My previous employer waited until super late to apply for my visa renewal. It was a job I was on the way out the door when they filed the paperwork. I'm now past the date and have an extension number.

I have a new job, but still don't my new visa or even any status update. I have let my current employer know all this information, but what sucks is I can't login to the Immigration Office system because my visa card number is expired.

I want to eventually apply for PR and don't want things like a late filing to be on my record. Is there anything I should do besides call Immigration office directly?

  1. Is your new job still in the same field of work – i.e. it would be covered by your previous visa? In that case you’re okay in terms of the visa; you can continue to work since your old residence card was automatically given a two month extension when you applied for a new one.

If your new job is in a different field, that’s a bigger problem – that would mean you’re currently working illegally. It sucks, but when you need to change visas to change jobs, you’re expected to wait for the new visa to be issued before you start working.

FWIW, it’s also a bit weird that your old employer sent in visa update paperwork when you were about to leave – that means your employer has changed mid-application and the immigration office will probably want a bunch of updated forms and paperwork from you and your new employer.
