The sweltering weather is expected to continue in Japan on Tuesday, from the Tohoku region in the northeast to the Kyushu region in the southwest.
The Meteorological Agency says a high pressure system is covering wide areas, including some in eastern and western Japan. It notes that is causing temperatures to rise.
Daytime highs are expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius in Kyoto City and Yonago City on Tuesday. The mercury is expected to hit 36 degrees in the cities of Aizuwakamatsu, Kofu, Nagoya and Yamaguchi. It is likely to hit 35 degrees in central Tokyo and in the cities of Aomori, Niigata, Osaka, Takamatsu and Fukuoka.
If the temperature reaches 35 degrees or higher in Tokyo, the city will tie the record set in 2022, when it experienced nine straight days of extreme heat.
Heatstroke alerts have been issued in 31 prefectures.
People in those prefectures are being urged to take steps to prevent heatstroke, such as using air-conditioners appropriately, taking in fluids and replenishing salt.
Due to damp air and rising temperatures, some areas, especially those in eastern and western Japan, could be hit by thunderstorms in the afternoon. Torrential rain may also hit some places.
People are being urged to watch out for landslides, floods in low-lying areas, swollen rivers, lightning strikes and wind gusts.
