Morning exercise stamp. This year, there were zero participants

While teaching in Aomori, Maeta Shoaki maintained the tradition of summer radio calisthenics, which he had inherited from his late father, often known as the “stamp uncle.” For years, local children gathered at the park for radio calisthenics, collecting stamps on attendance cards. However, with fewer children in the area, participation dwindled to none this year, marking the end of Maeta’s duty.

This simple morning routine was once a hallmark of summer, and Maeta continued it with his portable radio for 17 years after his father’s passing. Despite the decline in participants, Maeta felt a sense of relief, yet an emptiness lingered. He recalled having 50 participants during his childhood, but numbers dwindled over time, with only one family attending in recent years. Now, Maeta looks forward to using the newly freed time for writing and video creation.

The decline in participation highlights broader cultural shifts. Many children now fill their summer schedules with extracurricular activities, leading to fewer joining morning exercises. Conversely, tourism issues are prevalent in Kyoto, where the influx of foreign travelers has sparked debates about cultural differences and local interactions.

The nationwide decline in childhood participation in traditional summer activities, like radio calisthenics, owes to factors such as busy family life, urban living, and extreme weather. Despite these challenges, radio calisthenics offer unique social and health benefits—encouraging early morning activity and community engagement.

Recognizing these benefits, organizations like the National Radio Calisthenics Federation continue advocating for them through events and educational initiatives. They emphasize the simplicity and accessibility of this exercise and its positive impact on community cohesion.

Maeta shared his reflections and received overwhelming support and nostalgia from others who fondly remembered their own experiences. His story and the supportive responses resonate with many, highlighting the significance of preserving community traditions amid changing societal dynamics.
