This is why Okinawans get mad. Mainlanders don’t want American planes in their backyard but are fine with Okinawans carrying the burden. A perennial problem of postwar Japan only justified by drilling into everyone’s head that the alternatives are much worse.
Ask them how many want a US base in Japan and I bet the numbers don’t match up. NIMBYism.
The fallacy of American soldiers committing a lot of crimes is so overblown and I blame a lot of the Okinawan media and anti base proponents of perpetuating this myth.
Soldiers are restricted to their bases for most of the day and there are only specific times the soldiers can go out drinking so you it’s not like you see a bunch of soldiers just strolling outside the base usually anyway.
There’s an entire political party based around it called 日本共産党, the Japanese Communist Party.
Also why there is one taking up precious Tokyo airspace is still crazy to me.
And crime, and sexual assault. Oh and Depleted Uranium bullets.

With advancements in drones and hypersonic missiles, these bases can easily be neutralized. Japan can take care of themselves and don’t need U.S. bases in their country.

They won’t be singing that tune when the Japanese military gets involved in the future Chinese conflict and are hoping the Americans are backing them. Japan is already propositioning their aircraft in southern Japan to prepare.
