Customs/import taxes coming in

Sorry if it's been asked before — someone is sending me a gift from the US (under 10000 yen etc), and I just want to make sure I won't be charged customs on the Japanese side. Thank you!

I know it's a mess going the other way but don't see anything specific about US->JP changes.

  1. You might be. I was told I’m getting a 12$USD charge on a package coming in soon as well. No idea of the total value of the package, nor any idea of how the taxes will be collected.

  2. Depends on who/how it was send/delivered. IF it goes through DHL/Fedex, then most probably you’ll be ‘tax’ at least 10%. They are doing you a ‘favour’ by declaring/processing it for your convenience, fast clearance.

So, prepare for tax/processing fee invoice .. maybe.

  3. Last time I had to pay about 5,000 yen? for an item that was around 60,000 yen. So having ~20% of the value in cash would be safe I think.

  4. Just keep a few thousand yen near the door. You’ll either get billed on receipt of package, or they’ll give you an invoice that you can pay digitally or at conbini.

  5. You won’t be charged as long as the senders marked the package as a gift and not commercial goods or for the purposes of sale.
