Tokyo Metropolitan Government to Subsidize Air Conditioner Purchases up to 80,000 Yen for Senior Citizens and People with Disabilities

Amid prolonged record-breaking heat, Tokyo announced expanded subsidies for seniors and individuals with disabilities to purchase energy-efficient air conditioners, offering up to ¥80,000 in support starting on August 30.

The initiative, part of the “Tokyo Zero Emission Points” program, targets households without air conditioning or those requiring replacements due to malfunction or outdated models. New purchases will see an increase in discount from the current allowance of ¥10,000.

Governor Yuriko Koike highlighted the urgency of aiding seniors, who are frequently hospitalized due to heatstroke at home. She emphasized a strong commitment to backing the acquisition of eco-friendly air conditioners. In response to concerns from neighboring municipalities about budget disparities, Koike asserted that the surge in emergencies makes local governmental action mandatory, considering the measures as essential for safeguarding city residents.

The subsidy expansion was urgently proposed by four Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly groups: Tomin First no Kai, the Liberal Democratic Party, Komeito, and the Democratic Party for the People, on August 18.
