TL;DR Two former Canadian students at Yamanashi Gakuin University filed a lawsuit against the university and their alleged assailants, claiming sexual abuse and inadequate response from the university. The university dismissed the claims, citing cultural differences.

Japan at its finest.
Is the “cultural difference” that Japanese women are expected to shut up and move on?
Former Canadians? What are they now?
Type of news you’ll never see on Japanese social media.
cultural differences??? yeah right
According to the article, the perpetrator was a foreigner.
Where did they touch?
I went to this school around the time this was happening. [Here is a video](https://youtu.be/0gEVgsGwcrs?si=T1UcJiOD5tpnARKV) by the student that filed a lawsuit in May (as mentioned in the article, not the same as the other two plaintiffs) which gives some more insight.
Jesus this is bad, and I doubt this was their first time.
Maybe someday all the people from around the world who love Japan for the food, culture, and animation will see the society for what it is: sexist, racist, and generally unaware and indifferent to what’s going on in the rest of the world.
Oh boy, this really triggers bad memories.
I also went to school in Japan(not this university) and got sexually assaulted during an internship program. When I talked to the school about it, the professors said they’d talk to the company and take care of everything, so I shouldn’t go to the police. I knew that if my family found out, they’d force me to drop out and return home so I decided to wait and see.
Many months later, nothing happened so I went to talk to the dean to ask what was happening. He basically blamed me, saying that I should have known better as a woman and that I couldn’t correctly judge people.
At first, I thought he was just an asshole. But I gradually learned that this was how the Japanese treated SA victims. Now, I understand that nowhere is great in terms of women’s rights, but it’s much worse in Japan.
After my SA, a male sempai who also knew my abuser asked whether I would have gone out with him if he asked me nicely instead of attacking me, he was a hot guy anyway. A female professor who was very nice told me that she believed that women who got groped in the train must be wearing revealing clothes. When I pointed out that it usually happened when people were commuting, she insisted that they must have something that attracted men.
I should have left Japan asap, but I ended up working there for a couple years after graduation (I was from a third world country and felt like it might be better than going home). Well, a girl in my department got molested by a sempai. The HR said maybe she was sending wrong signals to men…
I’ve moved on from the sexual assault (because I went to the guy’s house and punched him in the face). But I still see a therapist because of what the dean said to me. I still feel like if SA happens to me again I’ll get blamed like that.
I don’t live in Japan anymore. I don’t care if you disagree, they just don’t respect women. If you want to see how they treat SA victims, read what happened to Shiori Ito when she went public with her SA(hint: she got harassed to the point she had to leave Japan). I just hope that the young women who have decided to sue their school get justice.
What she’s saying in the article is true, I was a student at that University and these are usually connected to their partner institution on campus that allows foreigner to more easily enter, International College of liberal arts is the name. Another woman that I personally knew also stacked up evidence for a case for over a year and brought it to the school, and I’m pretty sure it’s still being fought. The perpetrator is a guy I knew that was a basketball player for YGU and by the time she brought this case he had graduated and was picked up by a basketball team in Tokyo. This school has a TON of problems with sexual assault, these girls are incredibly brave to come out with their stories and to try to get justice as I personally know stories and people who have been sexually assaulted and abused/harassed by other students and even teachers. When I was there me and the student body tried everything to make the administration understand and push consequences onto these people but they always dismissed us and never did A SINGLE THING against ANYBODY. Some of these incidents were even done in FRONT of school cameras and they did nothing. The school ICLA knows they don’t have the funding and are already in bad standing with YGU which is why they dismiss all cases so that they don’t get pulled from the school completely. The fault lays on both school as even the Dean of YGU met with several victims and still dismissed them and did nothing against the perpetrators because of the “bad look” it would give them. Everything there is all about fuckin appearances and nobody gets any fucking justice. That school is a shitshow and should be investigated 10000%
An Indian faculty member and a Nigerian exchange student, if you want to know their nationalities. The school sounds like a shithole.
It took until 1999 for birth control pills to be approved in Japan after 30 years of debate. It took them only six months to approve Viagra!
