Peanut Ramen?

Long story short I had a friend pass away back in June.

It was his birthday recently and I’ve been trying to find a Ramen Shop he always talked about. He colloquially called it “Peanut Ramen”. Unfortunately though nobody who went there with him can remember where it was or what the actual name of it is.

All I have to go off of is that he was stationed on Futenma (so maybe it was around there?) and these two pictures from his mom from Oct 2019. The shop might not even still be here.

If anyone recognizes the shop from these pictures it would really mean a lot to me if I could find it.

Thanks in advance. Haisai 🤙🏻

  1. I’m sorry for your loss. 🙁

Are you in any of the Kadena military groups? Maybe someone in there knows?
If not, I can screenshot this and post it in some of them and see if someone knows the place if you’d like me to.
I’d love to help you out and find it.

  2. It looks like tantan men (name of the dish), and they sometimes put peanuts in the bowl. Don’t know the place but it might help you narrow it down a bit since not all ramen places serve it.

  3. Looks vaguely like 坦々亭 (TanTanTei) which I think had two restaurants: one in Nakagusuku, and another one in the pipeline near Futenma. If so, the “peanut ramen” description sorta makes sense cause I do remember their staple ramen 坦々麺 (tantanmen) as having a bit of a nutty texture and flavor.

Here’s a Google Map link that does indeed show the Nakagusuku store as having closed: https://maps.app.goo.gl/nZwvyFN9AheZ995p6

They do appear to have a new restaurant in Nakagusuku. Though it has the same logo, from the photos it looks more like a general Chinese restaurant than the ramen place I remember: https://maps.app.goo.gl/fuZqkQo9UHnxgXJF9

Unfortunately, I could not find any reference to the store near Futenma.

  4. That’s definitely tantanmen, sometimes called dan dan since its based off a Chinese dish. The broth is made from sesame paste, although peanut butter is sometimes substituted which is most likely why your friend called it peanut ramen.

I’m sorry for your loss, OP
