Name on my individual number card.

I am in Japan for the past one month. I recently received a mail regarding the application for my individual number card. I had a doubt, since I'm a foreigner with a middle name. Will the name of my actual my individual number card be in English or in katakana?

  1. It will be whatever is written in your passport. As much as Japanese citizens misunderstand, foreigners cannot have katakana names unless some foreign government will put it on their foreign passport. Other than Japan I am not aware of such a country. That said, you can have an alias (kana or kanji) _appended_ to your my number card if it is already on your 住民票. It will not replace your foreign name and they will not remove it.

  2. Your passport name will be first, just like your residence card.
If you also have a legal alias, like a katakana version with no middle name, that will also appear. Eg:

    “`
    SMITH JOHN JAMES/スミス ジョン
    “`
