I saw a sign on the bus 34 today that said “please don’t put any makeup while being on the bus” with some lipstick and mirror emojis 💄 🪞 💋..
Does anyone have an explanation for me? I’m just very curious to understand the reason behind this sign.

It is about マナー。
Putting on makeup in close proximity with others exposes others to scents, powders, etc and honestly that’s not appreciated by most people in public. Even if you don’t think your lipstick smells like anything, it can smell to the person 30cm away from you.
To be clear with the population of Japan changing so much, public マナーseem to be changing as well so signs like this are there in case everyone needs to be reminded.
A lot of girls/women tend to put on their makeup while on the bus (and in a bunch of other weird places/situations)
I imagine that on a bus, if sudden braking/accelerating/steering/accident they could either get hurt (mascara brush in the eye?) or the makeup could fall/etc… and make a mess around and/or stain other passengers.
It’s something you are supposed to do at home, it’s just manner.
