Prefectural police lieutenant arrested on suspicion of attempted extortion inside a patrol car

A police sergeant from the Konosu Police Station has been arrested on suspicion of using a police patrol car and his position to extort money from an acquaintance and his wife.

The suspect, Hideyuki Okada, 55, is accused of illegally using the police department's system to look up the address of a 55-year-old male acquaintance in Higashimatsuyama on two separate occasions in February and May. On May 2, he allegedly drove a patrol car to the man’s home and attempted to extort money from the couple while inside the vehicle.

According to police, Mr. Okada partially denies the allegations, stating that the man had borrowed about 150,000 yen from him and he was just trying to get his money back. He said he does not believe his actions amounted to extortion.
