McDonald’s Japan said on Aug. 20 it will cancel the release of a planned One Piece card game Happy Meal promotion, which had been scheduled to begin Aug. 29.
The decision follows a chaotic rollout earlier this month of a Pokémon Happy Meal campaign. That promotion offered toys and, for a limited period, exclusive Pokémon cards. Despite a company request that customers limit themselves to five sets, some stores were overwhelmed on Aug. 9 as customers rushed to buy six or more, leading to disorder and heavy criticism of McDonald’s handling.
As part of a broader review of its Happy Meal promotions, the company said it will instead distribute toys previously offered in past campaigns.
