I wonder what areas they’re looking at, because last year in October I got a room in Ueno for ~60€/night, but now I paid 80€.
I’m in Osaka right now
Holy crap, on the weekends, that’s when the stupid hotel rates explodes
“Cheapest” accommodation on the weekends in Osaka tends to be around $200
Before August, rates were normal but now as the World Expo is close to ending, lots of tourists have FOMO so hence, the crazy rates
I doubt that
TLDR: Not for any “sustainable” reason. Partly because people were going to Osaka instead of Tokyo (for the World’s Fair) and partly because there was a dip in tourism because a manga predicted a major earthquake (which did not come).
Small life hack for finding affordable accommodation in high season:
1. Buy a Japan Rail Pass
2. Find a Shinkansen station with equal commute time, eg. Omiya or even Ustunomiya for Tokyo, Nishi-Akashi for Kobe and Osaka, etc.
3. Profit
I was fortunate enough to visit within a month of the country opening back up — paid about $140/night for a pretty darn nice 46sqm room with a sitting area, washing machine, kitchenette, etc. Last time I checked, it was closer $500/night now. Crazy.
